SOCORRO - Today New Mexico Certified Chile and the New Mexico Chile Association announced the format for their inaugural chile competition, The Great New Mexico Chile Taste-Off, to be held on September 21 at the Socorro Sports and Rodeo Complex.
“It will be a fun-filled event for the whole family, centered around the best chile in the world,” explained Sonja Schroeder, Executive Director of the Association. “There will be food, drinks, activities, and music. When the sun goes down, we will have red and green fireworks and the roasting of giant paper mache red and green chiles.” The Association has invited growers from around New Mexico to bring their chile to face-off in two planned competitions: A Judged Taste-Off and a People’s Choice Taste-Off. The Judged Taste-Off will consist of a panel of judges that will conduct blind tastings in the following categories: Green Mild, Green Hot, Red Mild, and Red Hot. Chile will be rated on a five-star scale, and the chile with the highest score for each category will win that category. There will also be a People’s Choice Taste-Off, in which the public is invited to sample chile directly from growers and rank their favorites. The chile receiving the highest score wins. “It’s sure to be a great competition, as we’ve had a lot of interest among growers from all around New Mexico” said Glen Duggins, a Lemitar chile grower and member of the Board of Directors of the New Mexico Chile Association. “Can you imagine the bragging rights the winners will lay claim to!” The Association will provide a winner’s badge for all five winning categories (four from the judged event and one People’s Choice) that can be used by the winning growers to promote their chile and chile products produced in 2019. In addition, winning growers will receive a free one-year membership to the Association’s New Mexico Certified Chile program. The event will kick-off at 12:30 pm, and the chile winners will be announced at 6:00 pm., to be followed by evening festivities of the “Burning of the Red and Green Chiles” and fireworks. It is FREE Admission to all of the events, tasting, burning and fireworks. Learn more by visiting https://www.nmchiletasteoff.com. The event will provide an opportunity for New Mexico growers to put their own red and green head-to-head against that of other state growers in a competition to decide whose chile is the best of the best. “We’re inviting New Mexico commercial growers, whether they grow one acre or 500, to participate in the competition because we want to give the public the opportunity to taste a variety of chiles in one place and be able purchase their favorites in stores and/or restaurants,” explained Sonja Schroeder, Executive Director of the Association. “You needn’t be a member of the Association to participate,” Schroeder emphasized. "All commercial growers in New Mexico are invited." The Association has created a website for the event, www.nmchiletasteoff.com, where growers can register to compete and where news and competition details will be shared as they are finalized. Socorro Mayor, Ravi Bhasker voiced his support for event, “The City of Socorro is proud to host such an important event for New Mexico chile growers and for everyone in the state. We’re working hard with the Association to hold a truly exciting event with food, music and activities that's sure to be a fun day for the whole family.” “Our world-class Rodeo and Sports Complex is the perfect venue for an event like this, with plenty of facilities for a large crowd, including an RV park for out-of-town guests to spend a few days,” added Bhasker. Socorro County Manager, Michael Hawkes, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "Socorro County is in full support of the City of Socorro’s upcoming event that will showcase all of New Mexico’s chile growers and producers as well as those companies that utilize New Mexico chile to produce their products. WHAT: The Great New Mexico Chile Taste-Off WHEN: September 21, 2019 WHERE: Socorro, NM, Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex ALBUQUERQUE - Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Wednesday correctly touted New Mexico Chile as the best in the world, whether it is from Chimayó to Deming, Lemitar to Hatch. The New Mexico Chile Association wants to let the public decide who grows the best New Mexico chile. Today the Association announced plans for “The Great New Mexico Chile Taste-Off,” to be held October 5, during the heart of this fall’s chile season.
All New Mexico growers whose chile is available for public purchase are invited to participate in the competition. While Hatch is one of the most recognized chile-growing regions in the state, not everyone is aware that many varieties of the world-famous peppers are grown all around the state. “There are countless flavors and nuances to New Mexico chile that represent the different growing regions,” said Gene Baca, President of the New Mexico Chile Association, “This competition will give producers the chance to put their chiles in the spotlight and face off with other growers.” Sonja Schroeder, Executive Director for the Association explained, “We’re inviting New Mexico commercial growers, whether they grow one acre or 500, to participate in the competition because we want to give the public the opportunity to taste a variety of chiles in one place and purchase their favorites.” Lemitar chile grower Glen Duggins, a member of the board of directors for the Association, threw down the gauntlet for fellow New Mexico growers. “Everyone knows New Mexico produces the best chile in the world. If you’re a grower, now’s the time to put your chile where your mouth is and see whose is the best of the best.” Chile growers across the state are already catching word of the competition. Deming grower, Zach Penn, responded to the challenge, stating, “New Mexico has the best chile, and I’m ready to put mine up against any chile in the state. Bring it on!” Not to be outdone, Shayne Franzoy, a grower from Hatch, chimed in,”Everyone knows the best chile is grown in Hatch, no contest. Better than Lemitar. Better than Chimayó. Better than chile grown anywhere." Growers Mario and Linda Rosales, from Lemitar, joined the fray "For 50 years the Rosales family has cared for and grown some of the best chile in the region. We stand ready to compete across the state of New Mexico." All chile growers in New Mexico are invited to register here.
