SOCORRO - Today the New Mexico Chile Association, along with the City and County of Socorro, announced that the upcoming Great New Mexico Chile Taste-Off will be held in Socorro on September 21, 2019 at the Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex.
The event will provide an opportunity for New Mexico growers to put their own red and green head-to-head against that of other state growers in a competition to decide whose chile is the best of the best. “We’re inviting New Mexico commercial growers, whether they grow one acre or 500, to participate in the competition because we want to give the public the opportunity to taste a variety of chiles in one place and be able purchase their favorites in stores and/or restaurants,” explained Sonja Schroeder, Executive Director of the Association. “You needn’t be a member of the Association to participate,” Schroeder emphasized. "All commercial growers in New Mexico are invited." The Association has created a website for the event, www.nmchiletasteoff.com, where growers can register to compete and where news and competition details will be shared as they are finalized. Socorro Mayor, Ravi Bhasker voiced his support for event, “The City of Socorro is proud to host such an important event for New Mexico chile growers and for everyone in the state. We’re working hard with the Association to hold a truly exciting event with food, music and activities that's sure to be a fun day for the whole family.” “Our world-class Rodeo and Sports Complex is the perfect venue for an event like this, with plenty of facilities for a large crowd, including an RV park for out-of-town guests to spend a few days,” added Bhasker. Socorro County Manager, Michael Hawkes, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "Socorro County is in full support of the City of Socorro’s upcoming event that will showcase all of New Mexico’s chile growers and producers as well as those companies that utilize New Mexico chile to produce their products. Socorro County is looking forward to working and collaborating with the City of Socorro in making the event successful now and in the future.” While the Association had initially selected a date in October, it has been rescheduled to September 21, 2019. “This puts us in the heart of chile season, when there’s more fresh chile available,” explained Schroeder.
